Every few years, the Royal Marines – the United Kingdom's amphibious special operations force – make their way across the pond to Marine Corps Base Quantico to compete for the ultimate bragging rights.

From April 17 to April 19, Marines from the United States and the United Kingdom competed in the Virginia Gauntlet, a three-day, multi-sport event that encourages competition and comradery.

“The Royal Marines and the U.S. Marines, you know we have chewed a lot of dirt together. We have fought a lot, a lot of battles together,” Col. Michael Brooks, Quantico’s base commander, said at the opening ceremony on April 17. "This week is all about high competition … we get to test our skills and carefully selected sports, testing our abilities against each other."

Athletes participated in a mutually agreed upon variety of sports consisting of track and field, general fitness, rugby, boxing, golf and Jiu-Jitsu.

Military personnel and their families were invited to watch the events at the Little Hall Theatre and Butler Stadium.

The Quantico Marines bested the Royal Marines in track, boxing and Jiu-Jitsu events, but the Royal Marines ultimately came out on top by winning soccer, the fitness competition, rugby and golf.
